Nora Zion’s album OBEKT (translated as “building
development”) is influenced by the Brutalist architecture she
was exposed to growing up in Bulgaria. Now based in Perth,
Australia, she has carved out her own distinctive style,
composed of contemporary club sounds cross-pollinated
with the 90s Balkan pop-folk and early 00’s dance music she
grew up on. Fusing the percussive elements of UK rave genres
like Breakbeat and Funky with pop-inspired melodies and
her own R&B style vocals (under the alias Bahasa Malay) the
10 track album pushes existing musical genre boundaries.
